Dhaka Tourist Attractions

Dhaka is the capital of Bangladesh and one of the busiest cities in the world. Bangladesh is now divided into eight divisions (similar to the concept of the province) and Dhaka is also a division that consists of 13 districts. In this article, we will know about 33 prominent tourist destinations of the Dhaka division.



  1. National Parliament 

Jatiyo Sangsad Bhaban is the national parliament house of Bangladesh. It is one of the largest legislative complex buildings in the world with an area of 200 acres. It was designed by Louis Khan. Its construction started in 1961 and it was finally completed in 1982.



  1. National Martyrs Memorial

Bangladesh has a brave history backwards, its freedom and democracy. In 1971 this country had to wage a war against trained Pakistan Army to win independence. More than 3 million people sacrificed their lives for the independence of the motherland. In their memory and respect this is a monumentum.



  1. Central Shaheed Minar

In the history of the world Bangladesh is the only country who had to shed blood to gain the right to talk in its own mother tongue. In 1952 Bangladesh (then East Pakistan) went through a language movement, on the February 21st few of the students who were protesting in Dhaka University were shot dead by the police. In their memory and respect the Central Shaheed (Martyr) Monument was built. UNESCO declared 21ts February as the International Mother Language Day in 1999.



  1. Dhakeshwari Temple

Dhakeshwari means the Goodness of Dhaka. This is the national Hindu temple, it was built in the 12th century by the king Ballal Sen. This is a part of famous Shakti Peethas, the gem of Shakti's crown has fallen here. The 800 years original murti was taken to Kumartuli, Kolkata during the partition of India by the refugees. Nowadays the temple has a replica of the original idol.



  1. Lalbagh Fort (Lately Fort Aurangabad)

This is an incomplete 17th century Mughal fort complex, built by Subahdar Muhammad Azam Shah who was the son of Emperor Aurangzeb and the grand son of Emperor Shah Jahan. The construction was started in 1678 and ended in 1684 as Azam Shah had to go away from Dhaka and Shaista Khan, the grandson of Shah Jahan got appointed there. Pari Bibi the daughter of Shaista Khan died there and the tomb of her is also in the area of the fort.



  1. Ahsan Manzil

Ahsan Manzil was the erstwhile official palace of the Nawab of Dhaka. It was established between 1859-1872. Sheikh Enayet Ullah, the landlord of Jamalpur-porgona district built this palace and named it, ‘Rangmahal’. 



  1. Curzon Hall

In 1904 Curzon Hall was intended to be the town hall of Dhaka. It was after the Viceroy Lord Curzon. But with the establishment of the University of Dhaka in 1921, it became a building of the university’s science faculty.



  1. Armenian Church

The Armenian Apostolic Church of The Holy Resurrection was established in 1781. It is the testimony to the existence of the Armenian Community in this region in the 17th and 18th century.




  1. The Rose Garden Palace

The mansion was built in the late 19th century by landlord Hrishikesh Das. This building was built to stage Jalsas (parties). The landlord became bankrupt due to his extravagant lifestyle and was forced to sell the building. 



  1. Mohera Zamindar Bari

This landlord's palace was built before 1890 inspired by Córdoba City, Spain. This is situated in the Tangile district of Dhaka division. The landlord and his family were killed during the liberation war in 1971, few of them could run away. After that it was used as a camp of freedom fighters and in 1972 it was converted into a police training school.


  1. Padma Multipurpose Bridge

The Padma Multipurpose Bridge, commonly known as the Padma Bridge, is a two-level road-rail bridge across the Padma River, the main distributary of the Ganges in Bangladesh. It connects Shariatpur and Madaripur, linking the less developed southwest of the country to the northern and eastern regions.



  1. Hatirjheel

This is a lake which was a slum area before 2009. The government transformed it into a recreational zone with an alternative way too. The transformation was done by the army and other organizations. 



  1. Panam City

One of the earliest cities of Bangladesh which is still standing today. This city was founded around the 13th century. Its ancient establishments and archeological ruins are situated near Sonargaon, Narayanganj, Dhaka.



  1. Baliati Zamindar Bari

Landlord Gobinda Ram Shaha founded this premises back in the 18th century. There are seven palaces. The palace area occupies around 5.88 acres enclosed. There are about 200 rooms inside the enclosed area. At the back of the Palace is a pond (dighi).



  1. Star Mosque

Start Mosque also known as Tara Masjid was built by Mizan Ahmed Jan in the first half of 19th century. This is situated in Armanitola, Dhaka.



  1. Baitul Mukarram National Mosque

In 1959 the construction of the mosque was started. It was proposed by Haji Abdul Latif Bawany. This mosque has a capacity of 42,000+ people.



  1. Bangabandhu Memorial Museum

Bangabandhu Bhaban, Bangabandhu Memorial Museum simply addressed as Dhanmondi 32 was the personal residence of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the first president of People's Republic of Bangladesh and the leader of the Bangladesh liberation war in 1971. In the midnight of 15th August, 1975 the president(then) and his whole family was assassinated in this house. Now it is preserved as a memorial museum. 



  1. Rayer Bazar Baddha Bhumi

In the last stage of the Bangladesh liberation war, the East Pakistan government understood that they had to leave Bangladesh with its own identity and independence. That time they had a shameful plan of destroying Bangladesh intellectually. They arrested all the popular talented persons of the country and on 14th of December, 1971 and killed them all at this spot of Rayer Bazar.



  1. Arial Beel, Munshiganj

The third largest wetland of Bangladesh, covering an area of 136sq km between the Padma and Dhaleshwari river. It is located 35km south from the capital Dhaka. Normally it takes one and a half hours to get there from Dhaka city.




  1. Hussaini Dalan

Hussaini Dalan is an Imambara built in1642 AD during the time of Mughal ruling. Built as the main Husssiniya of Dhaka for the Shia Muslim community. In the tenth day of arabic month Muharram religious gathering remembers the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad SAW.



  1. Bora Sardar Bari


Older than 600 years Bora Sardar Bari is a house of the ancient city of Sonargaon. The area of the house is 27,400sf, it has 447 rooms on the ground floor and the first floor consists of 38 rooms.



  1. Ruplal House (former Aratoon House)

Armenian businessman Stephen Aratoon built this house in 1825; it was bought by Ruplal Das and his brother Raghunath Das in 1840. They reconditioned the establishment by an architect firm of Kolkata.



  1. Bara Katra

In the Mughal period Dhaka was a port city. In 1644-1646 AD Mir Abul Qasim, the chief revenue official of Prince Shah Shuja built this. This was intended to be the residence of Prince Shuja but he gifted this to Mir Abul Qasim.



  1. Choto Katra

One of the oldest ruins of Mughal Establishments in Dhaka. It was built by Subahdar Shaista Khan during 1663-1671. The British made some additional use of the katra as in 1816 it was used as the first English Medium School in Dhaka by Padre Leonardo then the first normal school in 1857.



  1. Hazrat Haji Khawja Shahbaz Khan Mosque

Hazrat Khawja Shahbaz Khan built this mosque in 1679AD. This mosque is divided in three interior sections, each section is roofed over by an onion dome.



  1. Goaldi Shahi Mosque

Goaldi Mosque is situated in the historic ancient capital of Bengal Sonargaon. This mouse was built in 1519 during the Sultanate period of Alauddin Hussain Shah. 



  1. Sonargaon

Once Sonargaon was the capital of Bengal. From the start of the Delhi Sultanate(13th century) to till the modern era(20th century) Sonargaon is one of the few witnesses of this subcontinental revolution. This city has a fort, palace, house, landlord house, mosque and many other establishments and their ruins which are the evidence of thousands of years old history and culture of this land. If you are a history or architecture freak and reader then this is a must visitable destination for you.



  1. Banglar Taj Mahal

This is a replica of Emperor Shah Jahan's Taj Mahal, India. It was built in 2003-2008 and opened to the public in 2009. It cost about $58 million.



  1. Sonarong Jora Moth

Sonarong Twin Temple is situated in Munshiganj district of Dhaka. There are two temples beside one another. Mr. Rup Chandra built these both. The higher one is a Kali Temple built in 1843 which is about 15meters high. And the second one is a Shiv Temple which was built in 1886 compared to the Kali Temple, the Shiv Temple short.

  1. Autshahi Moth

This 300 years old Hindu temple is a very prominent religious structure among the local Hindu community. In the early 18th century Bijoyram Kor built this temple.



  1. Radha Gobindo Temple

Locally known as Binoy Shadhur Mandir is one of the most ancient temples in Munshiganj district. Binoy Shadhu is taking care of this temple from more than 80years. Binoy Shadhu along with his Shadhu named, Mongola Rani Das discovered the temple. It was hard to find the actual establishment date or time period of this temple but some clues say that it might be thousand years old.



  1. Autshahi Mughal Mosque

Autshahi Mughal Mosque is a ruin in itself. It is heard that in the 18th century, there were only 10 Muslims in the village and this mosque was built for them.



  1. House of Mithu Kalu Bepari

A 150years old house near to the Sonarang Jora Moth at Tongibari Upazila of Munshiganj district. It was built by a renowned machine Mithu Kalu Bepari.



So there 33 were the most popular places or locations that tourists visit in the Dhaka division of Bangladesh. There are a couple of other tourist attractions in Dhaka city that are not much popular or crowded as the enlisted places in the article. But slowly in this blog, we will add details posts about those not such prominent tourist locations in Dhaka city, the capital of Bangladesh.
